On James' journey through the town of Silent Hill he encounters other people trapped in their own personal struggles. This selection reviews the profiles and backgrounds of these characters. For in-depth analysis of each character, consult after you have completed the game.
James, the main character of Silent Hill 2, has yellow-green eyes and blond hair. He normally works as a clerk at a small company and is reserved. He is quiet and does not like to talk about himself. He is known to have a bad temper and little taste for humor. James was a loving husband until his wife Mary fell ill with a rare, fatal disease with no chance of recovery. Three years later he receives a letter from Mary, inviting him to their place of memories, the town of Silent Hill.
Although James occasionally shows emotion and naivety, he remains a hard character to read. Over the course of the game you begin to notice patterns in his behavior that suggest he is affectionate by nature and has accumulated strong feelings about his past with Mary. His desire to find his wife outweighs any other concern on his journey.

Fate

Mary, James' sweet and loving deceased wife who died three years earlier, had brown hair and hazel eyes. Originally cheerful and kind, her rare illness understandably altered her personality into one of anger, despair, and instability. On her sickbed she cried that she did not want to die, yet at times seemed to welcome death. She told James to leave her because she felt ugly and useless, but she also wanted him by her side until the end.
The illness brought out the worst in her behavior, but at heart she was truly loving and affectionate, balancing James' harsher nature. Three years after her death from an unknown illness, James receives a letter from Mary calling him to their "special place" in Silent Hill. Defying logic, his emotions drive him to visit the town in search of his beloved.

Fate

To a large extent the enigma of Silent Hill 2, James meets Maria in Rosewater Park where he initially mistakes her for Mary, but within reason. Maria could be Mary's twin in appearance, but she is much less reserved in clothing and behavior. Natural brunette, Maria has blue eyes and bleached blond hair with red tips. Without telling James directly, she seems to be an exotic dancer who worked at Heaven's Night. Maria can be cheerful and positive, but also playful and sarcastic, and has a wilder, mischievous side.
When she meets James in the park, Maria decides to accompany him and help him find his wife, but there is certainly something very strange about her. Although James does not understand it, she knows his name without him saying it, and she may know more than she lets on.

Fate

This little girl clearly holds a grudge against James, but he has no idea who she is. Laura, with blond hair and blue eyes, grew up in an orphanage with no siblings or parents. She is restless, runs from place to place, and has no trouble navigating Silent Hill's dangerous streets alone. She continues to create obstacles for James and acts like a brat, but she may know something we do not. After all, she reveals that she knew Mary, which certainly makes James want to talk to her even though he is very elusive.

Fate

James initially finds Eddie in a rather dire situation inside the apartments, vomiting into a toilet. Eddie has blond hair, gray eyes, and is overweight. His usual job was part-time as a gas station attendant, but he reveals to James that he is not from Silent Hill. In several encounters, Eddie is very evasive in trying to avoid any responsibility for the events that occur around him. While he may seem sincere during the first meeting, James will gradually discover the trail of lies and deceit during Eddie's descent into madness.
