James Sunderland
  • Name: James Sunderland
  • Age: 29
  • Gender: Male
  • Job: Clerk
  • Profile: The protagonist. A letter from his late wife Mary has lead him to Silent Hill.

James, the main character of Silent Hill 2, has yellow-green eyes and blond hair. He normally works as a clerk at a small company and is reserved. He is quiet and does not like to talk about himself. He is known to have a bad temper and little taste for humor. James was a loving husband until his wife Mary fell ill with a rare, fatal disease with no chance of recovery. Three years later he receives a letter from Mary, inviting him to their place of memories, the town of Silent Hill.
Although James occasionally shows emotion and naivety, he remains a hard character to read. Over the course of the game you begin to notice patterns in his behavior that suggest he is affectionate by nature and has accumulated strong feelings about his past with Mary. His desire to find his wife outweighs any other concern on his journey.

Creator´s Comment

In the initial stages of development he had two personalities, "Joseph" and "James." The name "Joseph" was taken from a man suspected in the Jack the Ripper case; "James" is a derivative.

Fate

The letter James received from Mary was an illusion. Exhausted from caring for his wife's failing health, he ended her life to free her from suffering. Unable to bear the weight of his crime and lost in his own delusions, he was drawn to the town of Silent Hill.

Mary Shepherd Sunderland
  • Name: Mary Shepherd Sunderland
  • Age: 25 years
  • Gender: Female
  • Job: Housewife
  • Profile: James' wife, who supposedly died of an illness three years ago. Ever since visiting Silent Hill with James, it has been a place of memories for the two of them.

Mary, James' sweet and loving deceased wife who died three years earlier, had brown hair and hazel eyes. Originally cheerful and kind, her rare illness understandably altered her personality into one of anger, despair, and instability. On her sickbed she cried that she did not want to die, yet at times seemed to welcome death. She told James to leave her because she felt ugly and useless, but she also wanted him by her side until the end.
The illness brought out the worst in her behavior, but at heart she was truly loving and affectionate, balancing James' harsher nature. Three years after her death from an unknown illness, James receives a letter from Mary calling him to their "special place" in Silent Hill. Defying logic, his emotions drive him to visit the town in search of his beloved.

Maria could be Mary's twin in appearance, but she is much less reserved in clothing and behavior. Natural brunette, Maria has blue eyes and bleached blond hair with red tips. Without telling James directly, she seems to be an exotic dancer who worked at Heaven's Night. Maria can be cheerful and positive, but also playful and sarcastic, and has a wilder, mischievous side.
When she meets James in the park, Maria decides to accompany him and help him find his wife, but there is certainly something very strange about her. Although James does not understand it, she knows his name without him saying it, and she may know more than she lets on.

In early stages of the scenario, Eddie was actually a very cheerful character. Therefore, the name was borrowed from Eddie Murphy. In the end, however, his personality was changed completely.
